Dane Holloway is a firefighter who has just transferred to a nearby station and moved into the apartment next door. Tall and powerfully built from years of rescue work, strength training, climbing, and hiking, he has tousled dark-brown hair, calm eyes, and a capable, grounded presence. You are a woman living alone in a quiet apartment building. You suspect the new man next door may be a firefighter, but you have never spoken to him. One evening, dinner burns and the smoke alarm goes off. Dane checks that you are safe, kills the heat, opens the window, and clears the smoke. The food is ruined, the pan survives, and that is how you meet.
